Harmonizing Energy Transition with Ecosystem Preservation: CE Perspectives from the Global South

This session invites you to reflect on what constitutes a sustainable use of nature in the context of the ongoing energy transition. While the importance of minerals in reducing CO2 emissions, particularly in the Global North, is widely recognized, it is equally crucial to preserve ecosystem functionality and support non-metallic economic trajectories that sustain local populations. This approach helps prevent mass migrations in the Global South and safeguard the fragile functions of ecosystems.

The energy transition presents a pressing challenge for extractive economies: how to source critical minerals without breaching ecosystems’ biophysical limits or undermining local economic practices rooted in traditional knowledge and sustainable environmental use. This proposal advocates for integrating circular economy principles into mining processes and the value chains of transition minerals. By aligning extractive activities with ecosystem management, we can ensure the viability of diverse economic trajectories while safeguarding ecosystem functions.

Central to this approach are the issues of water use and carbon emissions, as the current extractivist model—driven by rising mineral demand—intensifies resource depletion, pollution, and land use changes. This threatens the survival of non-metallic economic practices that preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage. A circular economy framework offers an opportunity to harmonize ecological preservation with economic goals, promoting sustainable, equitable development in regions facing these pressures.

This webinar is an accelerator session at the World Circular Economy Forum 2025 (WCEF2025.com). WCEF2025 will gather forward-looking thinkers and doers and present the game-changers in the circular economy. The forum will be held from 13 to 16 May in São Paolo, Brazil. WCEF2025 is organised jointly by the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, FIESP (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), CNI (Brazilian National Industry Confederation) and SENAI-SP (Brazilian National Industrial Learning Service), in close collaboration with international partner organisations. Free of charge, open to all online.
