Loop, a Kenyan-born innovation bringing highly nutritious and delicious pet food to the market, crafted from sustainable and upcycled inputs. By sourcing from nature and local communities, they redefine what responsible pet care can look like.”
Loop manufactures pet food made from proudly Kenyan, circular ingredients such as:
- 🐛 Black soldier fly larvae, sustainably farmed in Kenya
- 🥕 Rescued vegetables from Nakuru’s smallholder farmers (via Farm to Feed)
- 🍺 Brewery spent grains from 254 Brewery
- ➕ And other upcycled inputs
The Problem
The global pet food industry has an enormous footprint:
- Pets consume 20% of the world’s meat (fish, beef, pork, chicken).
- 3% of food is lost or wasted in the food supply chain.
- Heavy reliance on traditional livestock protein adds pressure on land, water, and biodiversity.
Loop solves these challenges by replacing conventional protein sources with insects while simultaneously upcycling surplus food from local farmers and breweries. By targeting to replace 1% of East Africa’s pet food imports (~$600M market) by 2028, Loop is reshaping the industry with local, circular, and sustainable alternatives.
Circular Economy Alignment
Loop Pet Food demonstrates circularity at its core:
- 🔄 Using Existing Resources: Diverts rescued vegetables, brewery grains, and insect protein into high-value nutrition for pets.
- 🌱 Zero Waste Company: All food processing waste is collected and sent to Ololo Farm, where it feeds black soldier fly larvae, closing the loop.
- 🐛 Sustainable Proteins: Insects provide a low-impact, scalable alternative to conventional livestock-based proteins.
- 🌍 Local Value Creation: Reduces reliance on imports, supports smallholder farmers, and builds demand for insect farming.
Impact
Since 2023, Loop has achieved measurable success:
🌍 Environmental Impact
- Diverted 20,000 kg of organic waste from landfill
- Avoided 93,000 kg of CO₂ emissions
- Saved 360 hectares of land and 9 million liters of water
🐄 Food System Impact
- Replaced the equivalent of 100 cows worth of protein from the pet food supply chain, freeing livestock resources for human consumption
💰 Economic & Social Impact
- Reduced dependency on imported pet food by developing locally sourced, circular alternatives
- Created new market opportunities for insect farmers and smallholder producers
Loop is still refining its impact calculator to capture and report even more detailed data on its circular benefits.
Loop Pet Food proves that pet care can go circular. By blending insect protein innovation with food rescue initiatives, Loop is tackling climate change, reducing waste, and transforming how we feed our pets — while empowering local farmers and reducing import dependency.
It’s a small company with a big vision: to build a circular pet food industry in East Africa, one bowl at a time.
