About Tetra Pak
Tetra Pak®, the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Guided by my motto, ‘PROTECTS WHAT’S GOOD’, they are committed to protecting food, people, and our shared future. Their mission is to create the world’s most sustainable food package.”
Founded by Dr. Ruben Rausing, Tetra Pak was born from a vision to make milk safe, accessible, and easy to distribute. In 1961, they introduced the world’s first aseptic carton package — a six-layer packaging solution integrating paperboard, aluminum, and polyethylene that preserved food for months without refrigeration or preservatives. This breakthrough remains one of the most important food science innovations of the 20th century.
The Problem
Food waste is one of the biggest sustainability challenges of our time:
- 🌍 One-third of the world’s food supply is lost or wasted annually.
- 🌏 Asia accounts for 40% of global food loss and waste.
In India, an estimated 74 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, worth over ₹92,000 crore.
Without proper packaging, food spoils quickly, contributing to hunger, loss of resources, and climate change. Tetra Pak cartons help extend shelf life, ensure food safety, and reduce dependency on preservatives and refrigeration — enabling food to reach consumers everywhere while cutting down raw food waste.
Circular Economy Alignment
Tetra Pak has committed over €100 million annually for the next 5–10 years to improve environmental performance, reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics and aluminum, and scale carton recycling.
Key CE initiatives include:
- 🌱 Renewable Materials:
- Sugarcane-based plant polymers replace fossil plastics.
- In 2023, Tetra Pak sold 4 billion plant-based packages and 12.6 billion plant-based caps, fully traceable to sugarcane origins.
- 📦 Recyclable Packaging Innovation:
- Launched the world’s first aseptic beverage carton with a paper-based barrier (Portugal, 2023), raising renewable content to 90% and cutting carbon footprint by 33%.
- Developed Tethered Caps, which remain attached to cartons to reduce litter.
- 🔄 Recycling Ecosystem:
- Invested ₹75 crores in India over 20+ years to build carton collection & recycling infrastructure.
- Partnered with 30+ collection partners, 8 recyclers, and multiple paper mills to expand carton recycling.
- Enabled waste pickers and recycling entrepreneurs to build sustainable livelihoods.
- 🌍 Global Circular Leadership:
- First in packaging to achieve full traceability for Bonsucro-certified plant-based plastics.
- First to introduce caps using certified recycled polymers (France, 2022).
- Launched Tetra Rex in 2015, the world’s first fully renewable package made solely from paperboard and plant-based polymers.
- Entered a three-year partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2023) to accelerate circular design and capacity building.
